Sending Important Documents Overseas: Tracking, Customs & Peace of Mind
Power of attorney, land papers, academic transcripts, visa documents — when the envelope matters this much, regular mail is not the answer. Here is how to send documents internationally so they arrive fast and provably.
Some envelopes carry more weight than any box. A power of attorney that lets a brother in Sylhet handle a land sale. Original academic transcripts a university in London must receive by a deadline. A signed affidavit for an immigration case. At Bengal Enterprise in Hamtramck, document shipments are a daily part of our work — often to Bangladesh, but just as often to the UK, France, Canada, and Ukraine, the routes our customers ship most. Here is how to send papers overseas so they arrive quickly, trackably, and without customs surprises.
Why couriers, not postal mail
Regular international mail can take weeks, offers limited tracking once it leaves the US, and provides little recourse if an envelope disappears. Courier document services — DHL Express and FedEx International Priority are the two we use most — treat your envelope as a tracked shipment from our counter to the recipient's hand:
- Door-to-door tracking with scan events at every hub.
- Typical delivery of 3 to 6 business days to Bangladesh, 2 to 4 to Western Europe and Canada.
- Signature capture on delivery, so you can prove exactly who received it and when.
- A phone number to call — in both countries — if anything stalls.
For legal and time-sensitive papers, that proof of delivery is often worth more than the speed.
Documents and customs: easier, but not automatic
Pure documents — printed papers with no commercial value — clear customs far more easily than merchandise. Most countries, including Bangladesh, admit document shipments with minimal inspection. But three things still trip people up:
Declare it as documents, accurately
The waybill asks what is inside. "Legal documents — power of attorney, 4 pages" is a description that sails through. Leaving it blank or writing something vague invites an opening and inspection. We complete this with you at the counter.
Do not hide non-documents in the envelope
Slipping a phone, jewelry, gift cards, or cash into a document envelope is the fastest way to get the entire shipment held, and cash is prohibited outright. If you need to send an item along with papers, tell us — we will ship it correctly as a parcel, which usually costs little more.
Originals versus copies
Think hard before shipping one-of-a-kind originals. For many purposes — visa support letters, bank statements — certified copies or notarized duplicates are accepted, and losing a copy is an inconvenience rather than a crisis. When an original must travel (many land and court matters in Bangladesh require it), courier service with signature delivery is exactly the right tool; just keep a full scanned copy before it leaves your hands.
Preparing documents the smart way

A few habits that save our customers grief:
- Scan everything first. We offer scanning at the counter and can email files to you or your family before the envelope ships.
- Use a rigid envelope. Papers that arrive creased can be rejected by some offices; carrier document envelopes and cardboard stiffeners keep signatures and seals flat.
- Confirm the recipient's details. Full name as it appears on their ID, complete address, and a working phone number — couriers overseas call before attempting delivery.
- Check whether the receiving office needs an apostille or notarization. We cannot issue those, but we can tell you when a customer's paperwork typically needs one so you go to the county clerk before shipping, not after a rejection.
Tracking it to the door
Every document shipment leaves our counter with a tracking number on a printed receipt. You can watch it move: picked up in Hamtramck, gateway in the US, arrival overseas, out for delivery, signed. If a shipment sits at any stage longer than it should, call us at (313) 733-4374 — we can open a trace with the carrier from our side, which typically moves faster than an individual calling a hotline.
One counter, the whole job
Because Bengal Enterprise is also a print, copy, scan, and fax center, most document jobs are one visit: print the final version, make your copies, scan a set for your records, then seal, label, and ship. Staff speak English and Bengali, and we handle the customs description and waybill with you line by line.
